Watson-Marlow OEM pump selected by Pulsonic for new wastewater samplers

Watson-Marlow 501FDC/RL OEM pumps have been selected for use in innovative new wastewater sampler systems developed by Halifax-based Pulsonic Technologies Ltd. Chosen because the pumpXCHARXs performance could not be matched by comparable equivalent models, the move has already aided early sales of PulsonicXCHARXs new Hydrocell systems ahead of their official launch later this year.

Established in 1993, Pulsonic Technologies has grown to be a UK leader in the design and manufacture of wastewater instrumentation, offering products and turnkey projects that cater for flow monitoring and control, level control, wastewater sampling and industrial waste water treatment. Strong growth in the companyXCHARXs solutions business has led to recent investment in its instrumentation portfolio and the first result of these endeavours is the Hydrocell range of wastewater samplers.

“With Hydrocell we wanted to create an entirely new generation of intelligent samplers” explains the company”s Business Development Manager, Liam Duffy “this is a product you instinctively know how to use because it offers Windows based functionality, is operated by a simple to use full colour touch screen display and gives full graphical feedback just like a PC or games console. Quite simply, it is child”s play to operate and does away with complex instruction manuals and uncertainty users often feel when programming traditional type samplers.

The display offers the user a simple to use windows based interface, which allows for high ease of programming and also displays instantaneous data in both graphical and text format, and Pulsonic believe that the Hydrocell sampler technology will set the trend for the future as users demand simpler and more interactive user interfaces.

Not only is the Hydrocell the first in the market using advanced state of the art technology at its core, but it also incorporates other advanced features such as intelligent motor technology in the rotor arm, and advanced logging facility that can record sampling fill sequences, error status etc for a period of up to 20 years.

History of success
Watson-Marlow Pumps Group has worked with Pulsonic for many years on the instrumentation side of its business, so when the directive arrived for a new addition to the company”s product portfolio, Watson-Marlow was once again first port of call.

XCHARXWe found we simply couldnXCHARXt get the performance elsewhere in terms of pump lift capability,XCHARX explains Mr Duffy. XCHARXA lot of the trade effluent produced by companies such as food manufacturers flows through underground drains where the lift often needs to be as much as 7 metres. Normally an additional pump would be required to accommodate this, but the capability of the Watson-Marlow pump saves this extra cost.XCHARX

Watson-MarlowXCHARXs 501FDC/RL OEM pump is made up of a single channel 501RL pumphead, a powerful 12V direct current motor, the new Watson-Marlow gearbox and an aluminium faceplate. The 501FDC/RL provides the highest torque output, pump speeds and flow rates of all Watson-Marlow OEM pumps.

Supporting role
“An engineer from Watson-Marlow met with our R&D team to provide input to the development of our Hydrocell systems,” says Mr Duffy. “He worked with us to make sure the specification and capability was suitable for the market leading Hydrocell range.”

The 501FDC/RL is used in both of the Hydrocell models developed by Pulsonic XCHARX a cost effective two-bottle system, and a higher specification four-bottle refrigerated unit- ideal for preserving effluent containing highly degradable material.

Representative samples
“Water companies charge processing factories and other industrial customers with trade effluent consents on both their volume and toxicity,” states Mr Duffy. “At places such as food manufacturers where there is no sampling equipment in place, the water company visits once or twice a month and takes a spot sample for analysis. This can often result in massively unrepresentative samples and therefore inconsistent bills.”

Because the Hydrocell wastewater sampler is linked to a flow meter via relay technology, representative samples are always produced (through a composite sample-taking procedure) for billing purposes. The systems run on a daily basis from midnight to midnight, and are programmed to switch bottles automatically at 00:00 hours.

“We have extensive experience in this field and often see that bills get reduced once a wastewater sampler has been installed,” says Mr Duffy. “The Hydrocell Sampler with Watson-Marlow pump technology put us in a strong market position as it provides robust, outdoor capability from a single unit. In a world where environmental monitoring is becoming increasingly important, and in an industry where standards are continuously tightened, monitoring solutions need to be accurate, reliable, easy-to-use and give data that is simple to interpret.”
